Long time reader (of blogs), first time blogger. 

For quite some time I have thoroughly enjoyed reading friend’s blogs and use them regularly to download mp3 files and discover new artists; blogs and links play a massive role in the DJ community I occasionally consider myself part of.

Whilst this appreciation of blogs has a direct impact on my personal life and main hobby, I am very excited that one of my second semester modules (Online Journalism) is based entirely around online networking.

Last week’s lecture introduced us to the ‘Twitter’ sensation which I am shamed to say I was completely unaware of before starting the module. After a shaky start I am beginning to understand the whole point of Twitter. At first it came across to me as a glorified chat room reminscent of the pre-paedophile moral panic days of Yahoo Chat etc, but now I see how useful this platform is for building contacts in the Media and how it has completely reveloutionised the journalism industry.

I have also gained an online Twitter mentor in mature student Nigel Barlow – fun times ! Hopefully he can guide me in the right direction. I can only hope this is the start of a beautiful online relationship …

I am going to bring my first blog to a close as my fellow students are getting restless and the lesson is coming to an end. Plans for tonight include the long, unsatisfying journey home on two West Midlands busses (complete with soundtrack courtesy of 2-3 mobiles blasting out tinny sounding BASSLINE) and then off to The Rainbow pub with some friends for a few cheeky drinks and check out some cool local bands included Birmingham’s own mini celebrities Scarlet Harlots.
